Overview

About Kalpitiya

On a slender peninsula between a vast lagoon and the open Indian Ocean, Kalpitiya is Sri Lanka’s adventure-water capital. Steady cross-shore winds and flat, waist-deep lagoon water make it one of Asia’s best places to learn or master kitesurfing, with a season that runs while the rest of the coast rests. Offshore, spinner dolphins gather in superpods hundreds strong, with sperm whales passing in season. Add sandbar picnics on Vella Island, snorkelling at Bar Reef, and safaris into nearby Wilpattu National Park, and this quiet peninsula earns its rising fame.

Famico Insider Tip

Dolphin boats leave at first light pods of several hundred spinners are common on calm mornings.
