The sacred night climb to sunrise above the clouds
For over a thousand years, pilgrims of four faiths have climbed through the night to the summit of Adam’s Peak, where a single sacred footprint crowns the mountain. The ascent some 5,500 steps strung with lights like a ribbon up the darkness, is Sri Lanka’s great shared ritual: tea sellers at rest stops, grandmothers climbing beside backpackers, temple bells rung at the top. Then the reward: sunrise igniting a sea of clouds, and the mountain’s perfect triangular shadow cast across the world below. Difficult, unforgettable, and unlike anything else on the island.
Start climbing around 2am on a weekday full-moon (Poya) nights are magical but the steps become a slow procession.
