About Nuwara Eliya

The British came up here to escape the heat and never quite left in spirit. Nuwara Eliya still has the red post boxes, the racecourse, the hedge-lined gardens, and hotels with fireplaces lit every evening. At 1,900 metres it is the highest town in Sri Lanka, and the only place on the island where you will genuinely want a jacket.

What surrounds it is the reason to come. This is the heart of Ceylon tea country: estates stitched across every slope, pickers moving through the rows, and factories where you can watch a leaf go from bush to cup in an afternoon. Between the plantations sit waterfalls, a lake for evening walks, and Horton Plains, where the land simply ends at World’s End.

We often use Nuwara Eliya as the calm middle of a hill country route, arriving on the mountain railway and leaving the same way toward Ella.

Famico Insider Tip

Pack something warm. At 1,900 metres the evenings drop close to single figures, and most guests arrive from the coast with nothing but shorts.
