Ella is a small hill town with an outsized reputation. Perched on the southern edge of the highlands, it looks out through Ella Gap all the way to the plains below, and on a clear morning you can see the coast shimmering in the distance.
It started as a backpacker secret and grew into one of the island’s favourite stops, but the essentials haven’t changed: cool mountain air, tea estates stitched across every slope, and walks that start from your doorstep. Days here are simple. Climb something at sunrise, eat well, watch the train cross the Nine Arch Bridge, repeat.
We usually place Ella after Kandy on a hill country route, arriving by the famous blue train, which many of our guests call the highlight of their entire trip.
Start Little Adam's Peak at 6am and you'll have the summit, and the sunrise, entirely to yourself.
