Every week someone asks us the same question: Ella or Nuwara Eliya?
Fair. They sit in the same green highlands, both wrapped in tea, both cool enough that you’ll finally use the jacket you packed. But they are not the same trip.
Nuwara Eliya is the old one. The British built it as an escape from the lowland heat, and it never quite stopped pretending to be England red post boxes, a racecourse, a lake for evening walks, hotels with fireplaces. It suits travellers who want tea estate tours, colonial-era hotels, and slow mornings with a view of Gregory Lake. Families and older travellers tend to love it.
Ella is the young one. It’s a backpacker town that grew up well small, walkable, and built around three famous things: Little Adam’s Peak at sunrise, the Nine Arch Bridge with a blue train curving across it, and cafés where you’ll lose an entire afternoon without noticing. If your trip is about hikes, photographs, and atmosphere, Ella wins.
Our honest answer? On a trip of ten days or more, do both they’re connected by what many call the most beautiful train ride in the world, so the journey between them is the highlight, not the transfer.
