Sri Lanka confuses people because it has two monsoons. Here’s the trick: they hit opposite sides of the island at opposite times of year. So while one coast is getting rain, the other is getting sunshine which means there is almost no bad time to come. You just point your trip at the right coast.
December to April — the west and south shine. This is the classic season: Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna, the whale watching, the beach weather everyone pictures. It’s also peak season, so hotels in the south book out early. Plan two to three months ahead.
May to September — the east takes over. Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Arugam Bay. Quieter, warmer seas, world-class surf at Arugam, and noticeably fewer crowds. Some of our favourite trips of the year happen in these months.
The cultural triangle and hill country? Good almost year-round. Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy sit outside the worst of both monsoons expect the odd dramatic afternoon shower and carry on.
