Kandy

Kandy is a historic city located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, surrounded by lush mountains and tea plantations. It is renowned for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and spiritual significance. Kandy served as the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka and remains a vital center of Sinhalese culture.

At the heart of the city lies the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. This temple houses what is believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha, drawing thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year.

Kandy is also famous for the annual Esala Perahera, a grand cultural procession featuring traditional dancers, drummers, and decorated elephants. The city’s Kandy Lake, botanical gardens in Peradeniya, and colonial-era architecture add to its charm.

Surrounded by hills and forests, Kandy serves as a gateway to Sri Lanka’s central highlands and is an essential stop on many travelers’ itineraries.
