Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, is one of the island’s ancient capitals and a cignificant historical and religious site. Established in the 4th century BCE, it was a major center of Sri Lankan civilization for over a millenium. The city is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including towering dagobas (stupas), ancient temples, and royal palaces. Key sites include the Sri Maha bodhi a sacred fig tree believed to be a sapling of the original tree under which Buddha attained enlightement, and the massive Ruwanweliseya Stupa. Anuradhapura’s archaeological cignificance and its role as a pilgrimage site make it a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting visitors interested in Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and religious history.
