Sri Lanka's wildest park, and the best leopard odds on earth
Yala is where Sri Lanka stops being gentle. Nearly a thousand square kilometres of scrub, lagoon, and granite outcrop on the southeastern coast, it holds one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere in the world, along with sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles, and more birds than you can name in a morning.
Game drives run at dawn and late afternoon in open jeeps. Nothing is guaranteed, which is exactly the point, but a good tracker changes everything, and the park has a way of delivering when you least expect it. Even without a leopard, the landscape alone is worth the trip: elephants crossing at dusk, peacocks in the scrub, and the ocean appearing suddenly at the park’s edge.
Note that Block 1 closes each September for the dry season. We plan around it, and can move you to Wilpattu when the timing calls for it.
Take the 5.30am game drive rather than the afternoon one. Leopards move at first light, and you will share the track with a fraction of the jeeps.
